Essential Baby Proofing Tips and Tricks for New Parents

Mom baby proofing kitchen by gently stopping her curious one-year-old from reaching into a cabinet; real-life parenting moment highlighting toddler safety and baby proofing tips.

From Sitting Pretty to Crawling Chaos… Overnight

One minute, my son was happily wobbling during tummy time. The next? He was speed-crawling across the living room and trying to climb on the fireplace. I swear it happened overnight. One day he could barely sit without toppling over, and the next, he was in every single nook, cranny, cabinet, and closet of our house.

And in typical boy fashion, he was also on a mission to launch himself off every surface. So trust me when I say: start baby proofing early. I’m so glad my kids are going to be close in age, so we don’t have to do this a second time as we await baby number two in a couple months.

Baby Proofing Is Not as Easy as It Looks

Some parts were surprisingly more complicated than I imagined. You think: “I’ll just get a couple outlet covers and we’re good.” Nope. It’s a puzzle of creative problem-solving. Some solutions you figure out on your own. Others you pick up from mom friends (or scroll frantically on the Internet for solutions during nap time!).

And baby proofing doesn’t stop—it evolves. As my son grew taller, faster, and sneakier, we kept discovering new things to lock, latch, or pad. It’s an ongoing process, not a one-time fix.

Must-Have Baby Proofing Products and Clever Hacks

These are the tried-and-true products we use in our home—and I’d recommend them to any mama trying to keep a tiny daredevil safe:

🔒 1. Cabinet Locks That Actually Work Anywhere

Standard cabinet locks don’t always fit every cabinet… especially those vintage or nonstandard ones. This was definitely the case for us. We bought these standard cabinet locks at first. These worked for 80% of our doors and drawer.

👉 For those where the standard locks did not work, I found these baby proofing latches work wonders: Buy on Amazon
No drilling. Easy install. Even work on the fridge or trash can.

🧱 2. Fireplace Padding Hack

Our fireplace was the hazard zone and of course that was the only place our son wanted to play. To prevent injury, we used this fireplace foam bumper that wrapped around the edge and stuck securely: Shop now
Mom hack: Use command hooks + a baby gate as a temporary but sturdy fireplace barrier if needed.

🚽 3. Toilet Locks (Yes, Really)

Because of course he tried to splash around in the toilet.
These were lifesavers: Buy toilet lock here.
Easy for adults to open, impossible for toddlers. Note: You can use the baby proofing latches mentioned earlier, but I recommend the toilet lock for easier use.

💡 4. Outlet Covers & Power Strip Covers

We installed self-closing outlet covers throughout the house. So convenient!
And this power strip box keeps all those tangled cords safe: Shop on Amazon

🪑 5. Furniture Anchors – Non-Negotiable

We anchored everything—bookshelves, dressers, TV stands. Kids love climbing, and tipping hazards are real. A lot of our nursery furniture was from Pottery Barn Kids. These items all came with the appropriate anchor kits.
These no-drill anchors are also a breeze to use and won’t damage your walls: Check them out ! Please be sure to review weight limits for anchors and other safety guidelines.

🚪 6. Door Handle Covers That Actually Work

Our son can’t reach door knobs yet, but we already have purchased a solution in anticipation. Some doors need to stay shut—like the bathroom, pantry, or basement.
A friend of mine told me these twist-and-lock door knob covers have been a game changer in keeping little hands out for her: Buy here
They blend in nicely too, so they’re not an eyesore.

🚧 7. Baby Gates for Hallways, Stairs & Open Spaces

We thought we needed one gate. We now own four. You will find you need different sizes. If you have older adults in the home you may also want to consider one without a bottom bar. This is one of our favorites (versatile and can be moved around).

For stairs, I recommend a wall-mounted gate for extra security.

What I Wish I Knew Sooner

  • Baby proofing is never “done”—adjust as they grow taller, more mobile, and more curious.
  • Clever solutions often come from other moms (or trial and error).
  • Start early! Once they’re on the move, you’re constantly playing catch-up.
  • Move pet bowls outside of areas where your baby plays. Anytime we put the dog’s water or food on the floor, my son made a beeline for it like it was his personal splash pad.
  • Vacuum and mop regularly, especially in play areas and high-traffic zones like the kitchen and living room. Babies will literally find the tiniest scrap, crumb, or fuzz and put it in their mouth. Every. Time.

Final Thought:

You don’t have to baby proof every square inch of your house—but a little planning and a few key products go a longway in keeping your baby safe (and your stress level down). Have a clever hack you want to share with fellow moms? Share in the comments below.
